Salsa-101: How did you first get involve with music ?
CG: Around age 14 I started playing “Cow Bells” in local events in Cali Colombia
Salsa-101: Were there any musical influences from your family or friends ?
CG: My mother, as a dancer had the opportunity to come in contact with many latin musician such as Hector “La Voz” and Ruben Blades in Panama. Her stories and the stories of the good music made me what I am today.
Salsa-101: Who were your musical idols ?
CG: My musical idols are quite a few, such as Orquesta Narvaez, La Dicupe, La Flamboyan, Joe Pastrana, The Lebron Bros, El Gran Combo and many others.
Salsa-101: What music were you listening to when starting out ?
CG: I first started listening to Romantic Music such as “Trampolin” “Regresa Ya” “Gota de Lluvia” “Te Vas Arrepentir”. Then later I started to listen and study much deeper sounds . The songs from the “Lebron Bros.”, ” 10 Lagrimas” “Pena y dolor”, which are known worldwide were my school lessons.
Salsa-101: Who has given you a helping hand in your career as a musician ?
CG: A helping hand ? To be honest, sites such as www.salsa-101.com, that support this music of ours and inform the public of new up and coming musician. You must remember that the music that is put out there is not the true sound, what is heard is commercialize sounds.
Salsa-101: Do you play any instruments ?
CG: I’m also a percussionist. I play bongos, congas and the Bata drums.
Salsa-101: What do you like about the music environment ?
CG: I love the “Rumba” and the people associated with it.
Salsa-101: What don’t you like about the music environment ?
CG: The negativity and the envy express by musicians.
Salsa-101: What do you try to make different from other musicians ?
CG: Nothing different really. My main impulse is to make good old school salsa music . New songs , new words, new lyrics with that indescribable rhythm of the 70s 80s and 90s.
Salsa-101: What do you do to keep yourself going ?
CG: It’s rough. The truth is all the recordings are financed by me, even the production cost. Profits ? None yet. Thank God I’m a good “Salsero” that loves the music, if not I would have stop a long time ago. I call it my “Hobby” thanks to the fans and friends that support and keep embracing our work.
Salsa 101: What projects are you thinking of or currently working on ?
CG: We’re currently working on a DVD. The DVD will contain live recording of our songs. The project will showcase “Old School Salsa” with great musician. Look for this pretty soon.
Salsa-101: Anything new for the coming 2010 ?
CG: We’re working on a new CD. Included on the CD will be two of my compositions. One composition from 2000 called “Adventura”, recorded only with trombones, and “El Ladron de Tus Besos”. The other six songs with be romantic songs. Two songs have already been release. “La Chica de La Bella Mirada” and “Si Me Quires Querer” written by David César. The other three songs are from Marcela Valenzuela.
