Jimmy Bosch vs Barry Rogers
Jimmy Bosch vs Barry Rogers
It doesn’t get better than this
ROUND 1
ROUND 2
Jimmy Bosch still had hair and Barry Rogers was still alive and well and kicking ass with his Macho Style trombone playing: Cachao had a performing engagemnet in New York and as it was customary for him, he gathered the best musicians available at the time and invited them to join him. The chosen head liners that night along with Cachao were:
Charlie Palmieri – Piano
Nelson Gonzales – Tres
Pupi Legarreta – Violin
Roberto Rodriguez – Trumpet
Barry Rogers – Trombone
Jimmy Bosch – Trombone
Charlie Santiago – Timbales
Giovanni Hidalgo – Congas
José “Buyú” Mangual – Bongos
Felo Barrios – Vocals
The musicians, all seasoned veterans, known for their contribution to latin music each had created on their own with their respected bands. All except for one Jimmy Bosch. Jimmy was still an up and coming musician still paying his dues.
Later I come to learn that Jimmy studied latin music by listening to Eddie Palmieri, more specifically to the trombone sounds of Barry Rogers, his idol.
For me, that is what made this concert such a great event.
In any given event in life when a person’s turn comes up to perform, regardless of the platform stage , be it sports, lecturing, performing, playing, if the ingredients are correct the outcome could be AWESOME !!!
Such was the case with the solos taken by Jimmy Bosch and Barry Rogers.
Barry takes the first solo, keep in mind this is Jimmy’s idol. Barry starts off with his signature style smooth, powerful, and fast passionate sound. Barry knows that Jimmy is the young gun in the band tonight and playing the same instrument right after him.
Jimmy walks up to the mike, repositions the mike and starts wail.. playing small “MONAs” in preparation of what is to come,….one hell of a roller coaster trombone ride !!
The act of soloing is a combination of showing what you know, a little creativity, throw in some bravado, with a little “TAKE THIS” attitude and top it off with a slight pounding of the chest.. ha-ha
During a jam session, musicians always try to out do the other, especially if the other musician is playing the same instrument. That is what make DESCARGA so enjoyable. The same thing happens when you are watching your favorite team play their best rivals
Jimmy Bosch vs Barry Rogers , the title is all in good nature fun…. just like this night was for me.
What do you think, who won the duel ??
